Simplified Masterwork Solo version of one of Debussy's most popular
piano works. This ethereal, flowing section of Suite Bergamasque is
diatonic and displays a conventional harmonic vocabulary,
transposed to the Key of C. The title, Clair de lune, suggests a
relationship to Paul Verlaine's eponymous poem, describing a vision
of long-dead dancers in the moonlight. The music transmits the
otherworldly, transparent, and impalpable qualities of the
experience while maintaining clarity and definition. Perfect for
the burgeoning late elementary pianist.
Debussy's music epitomizes the concept of Impressionism in music.
One of the most famous pieces from Debussy's Preludes, Book 1, "The
Girl with the Flaxen Hair" is a lyrical piece, awash with color and
atmosphere. Drawing on the original autographed manuscript and
first edition by Durand, all editorial details are contained in
footnotes or parentheses.

This piece dates originally from May 1882, when Debussy made his
first public appearance as a composer, at a musical soiree in Paris
accompanying the violinist Maurice Thieberg. Among the other works
performed on that occasion was a Nocturne and Scherzo for violin
and piano by the 19-year-old composer, which has since disappeared.
In June Debussy made a new version for cello and piano, which
survives in autograph manuscript and is published here - in this
new edition by the musicologist and cellist Neil Heyde - for the
first time. Although the title implies two separate pieces, the
Nocturne et Scherzo is a hybrid piece, in which the opening Scherzo
material surrounds a cantabile episode of nocturnal character.

Composed between 1906 and 1908, the Children's Corner Suite was
written to capture the essence of childhood with charm, grace and
humor. Debussy's intention was to create moods and sensations and,
utilizing his typical harmonic richness, he succeeds in an
appealing and joyous fashion. This edition is based on not only the
original autograph manuscripts but also on Debussy's sound
recording of these pieces.

Consisting of four movements, this work for one piano/four hands
shows the influence of the French lyric opera composers Gounod and
Massenet. Debussy composed this work before he had fully developed
his Impressionistic style, and with its clarity of patterns and
conciseness of form, Debussy pays a kind of homage to the French
clavecinists. Dr. Hinson has included translations of French terms,
notes on performance and a discussion of the duet performance.

The Girl With The Flaxen Hair and Golliwog's Cakewalk are two of
Claude Debussy's most popular piano works. It has been said that
The Girl With The Flaxen Hair, with its impressionistic and
progressive harmonies, may have been a significant influence for
many jazz artists of the century. This is an arrangement for
trumpet and keyboard (organ or piano).
Score to Claude Debussy's General Lavine - Eccentric (Prelude 20),
orchestrated by Colin Matthews. During his time as the Halle
Orchestra's Composer in Association between 2001 and 2010, Colin
Matthews spent five years making orchestral versions of all 24 of
Debussy's Preludes. He has been heralded for the success with which
he has taken the inspiration of the piano masterpieces and
skilfully created orchestral works of great variety, beauty and
drama. Indeed, following their critical reception these works are
being taken up and performed by orchestras across the world.
